I’ve decided to post this as its own topic as I felt it could stand on its own. Thank you for teaching us a little about your town and keeping us informed about the massive metal scene which is vibrant and growing in India. Please read and comment!

Hi fren,
i am jeffrey kharsyntiew from a small town of Shillong, Meghalaya in north east India. i am a true metal fan who wanted to keep alive the metal faith in us and in our next generation. I was a graduate in economics honours and PG degree in adult and continuing education from North Eastern Hills University. I am recently working under a university project but at the same time trying to film a documentary about our band but as we know that we do not get help and inspiration for these kind of music but one day a time will come for us to shine and bring fame to our land through music.

i was searching for your email ID but it was difficult and then i saw your documentary on global metal and when you reach india, i was so ashamed of myself seeing mumbai and those bollywood stuff, but fren what you miss the most is your visit to shillong which is becoming the new rock capital of india overtaking bangalore. Shillong was a capital of Meghalaya, a small tribal christian state of india. We are very different with the way of life compared to the rest of india. The main reason is becoz we are christian and we follow western ideology. Our place has been a state popular in western music but it was isolated from the country due to cultural and religious belief. The centre does not pay attention to the western music especially when it comes to metal and rock.

As years goes by, shillong became one of the first Indian state to accept metal and rock music. due to the effort of our state businessmen and politicians we for the first time invited international band to the state and that was PETRA. after that, Fire House came and we were shocked to see the crowd. People of all ages flooded to the J.N Stadium. From that moment we realized that Shillong people will proved better to the rest of the states. Micheal Learns to Rock came after that followed by Paul Daino, the original vocalist of Iron Maiden. Air supply reached too which was then followed by Eric Martin of Mr. Big. Guess What after that SEPULTURA came which was my most memorable moment to see them performing live. The most important moment for us is the coming of The Scorpions to Shillong which make the people mad just after announcing their visit. Nearly 55,000crowded flooded to the stadium and many fans from the other parts also came to witness. from that time, Bangalore was erased from being the rock city of India and Shillong replaced it. A year after that “A mother of all concert” was organized which is the biggest concert with two bands performing live at one stage.. that is Fire House for the 2nd time and White Snake. The crowded reaches 50,000 to 60,000 which holds the largest number for a concert. in our state bollywood was never accepted by all as we do not speak hindi language and that is why the main language for communication here is english and this pave a way for western music. We have our death and metal bands like Project blend, Native rules, prisoner of choas, nemesis, and other bands which follows the footsteps of lamb of god, kreator, slayer, death, sepultura, etc….

Today the 28th Dec, 2009 we have an open air free metal and rock concert in which Parikrama, the metal band of the country will performed along with other rock and metal bands of north east india.

brother i hope to get a response from you so that we will be able to change the country through our work and finally my dream to put shillong in the metal map of the whole world will come true.

thanks.

    Hey guys….check out scene-unsorted.blogspot.com

  • Bangalorean

you must be dreaming man… shillong is nowhere close to bangalore….bangalore is and always will be indias rock capital… but will admit shillong is improving alot.. but will never reach the level of bangalore…the logistics for a metal concert in shillong is just not available.. Eg- enriques plane couldn land in the shillong airport.. and that was just a small private jet.. imagine ed force one trying to land there… plus accomodation ..lighting and sound.. security.. and sponosors appeal is jus very less there.. but will improve with time i guess… and to prove bangalores dominace.. lamb of god will be performing here on may 15th… plus judas priest is in talks for a june/july slot.. followed my maiden for the 3rd time in october/november…no place in india can beat bangalores dominance or even come close.. even in a 100 years

Thanks for the note Mr Bangalore. Your town sure does have it’s own vibrant scene. However so does Shillong playing host to massive shows. It’s clear that India boasts some very passionate and loyal metalheads which is what ‘Global’ and ‘Journey’ are all about. This ain’t no competition. Well done to both your cities!!

    Hi,

I am from Shillong, currently staying in Bangalore. I have to agree with Bangalorean about the Rock Capital tag – Bangalore is a big city with an international airport and logistically it s better for concerts. Also it has a population approx 15 times that of Shillong (even more) so the fan base is more varied.

however Shillong is different in a way that if there is a concert in town it becomes the centre of topics for the whole population whereas in Bangalore it’s restricted to the music following sub-culture (difference between small town and city obviously)

Also the local scene in Bangalore is thriving because the money is there and bands get gigs more frequently than their equally talented and driven peers in Shillong – basically its all about organisation and promotion. Shillong is still quite raw but the passion is as intense as Bangalore if not more.

Last note: these comparisons can go on but lets not forget we’re comparing a big growing global city in the middle of India to a smaller urban center in a relatively difficult to access part of India. There are just too many reasons the comparisons shouldn’t take place in the first place.

first, of all dude metal is a culture dat people follow, like s.dunn had said but remember dis, people in bangalore may have the facility ,the money or any other bnullshit but one thing they will never have the true unity that shillong fan have for music.
and another thing bro , lets face it, out of a 1000 people in bangalore i think 20% may listen to western music well tell you what try shillong then u will relize .. . . . . . . .

Shawn Lane the legendary guitarist and composer spent time jamming with the locales of Shillong in February, 2003. In a comment made later about Aizawl and Shillong, he said:
“ …Man, this place barely exists on the map and there are all these wonderful people coming out of the woodworks with Powers of 10 albums and posters that I haven’t even seen in America…(T)hey know everything I have ever done, every tune I have ever played… it’s just bizarre, simply inconceivable…I think this sums up the entire debate…. for those who have never been part of the music scene in Shiloong be there and you will remember forever….

I have had the opportunity to attend innumerable concerts both in Shillong & Bangalore (I’m a Bombayite myself) and let me tell you this :

Bangalore definitely has the most thriving rock scene in India – there is absolutely no doubt about it. The city has grown from strength to strength because of the youth crowd that dominates its BPOs, its IT companies and so much more. Also they have one of the most beautiful and well-maintained international airports in India (after Delhi of course). What’s more, the organizers are always hell-bent in getting the best bands from across the world to perform in the city.

But Shillong is a different ball-game altogether. The crowds, the ambience, the infrastructure might not compare to Bangalore by far, but the sheer intensity and the fervor with which these guys worship metal, puts them in a completely different league altogether. I don’t know how to play any musical instrument and have never been in a band but the comparison is simple – would you rather be playing in front of a crowd of a thousand people, most of them yuppies, who have heard a couple of your songs or would you rather play to just fifty people – when each of them is a lead guitarist, vocalist, bassist or drummer with their own band and who know each and every one of your songs down to the tee – lyrically and musically. If I was in a band, I’d be packing my gear and heading to Shillong ten times out of ten. m/ m/
