Metal Evolution Teaser – 30s (VH1)

Metal Evolution presents 11 episodes based on the ground-breaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree”. This 26 sub-genre genealogical chart reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the Chart as his road map, host/producer and metalhead turned anthropologist Sam Dunn, crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. From bars and back alleys to the biggest open air festivals, Sam will visit the pioneers of British and American hard rock who laid metal’s sonic foundation, as well as the current leaders of contemporary metal. Whether you love metal, documentaries or just great stories, Metal Evolution is the ultimate examination into the history of Heavy Metal music.

Drawing on the expertise of a whole team of musicians, journalists, academics, and producers, Sam will explore the questions heavy metal fans have always wanted to ask. A highlight of the series will be Sam’s in-depth discussions with many of heavy metal’s most important and influential personalities. From Alice Cooper to Slash, Lemmy to Rob Zombie and members of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slayer, Van Halen, Def Leppard, The Stooges, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, Poison, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Korn, and many more, Sam will investigate the history, myths and intricacies of Metal.

    good stuff

  • Jbkelly99

I really hope there is an episode on Doom Metal (Sam lumps it in with Stoner Metal).  We can’t leave out Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal.

-I have to say that Death, Doom, Melodic Death, Black and Thrash Metal are what true metalheads really want to hear.

Thanks and keep up the good work!!!

  • Saul

excuse me, im from Mexico and I want to know where to buy ´´Metal Evolution VH1´´

    • Anonymous

Hey Saul, the series ‘Metal Evolution’ just finished it’s 11 episode run on VH1 Classic channel last week. At the moment, VH1 Classic is still airing reruns of passed episodes if you happen to get this basic channel (for US). At the moment, this series is not on sale for DVD/Blu-Ray. Usually when a series finishes it doesn’t actually get released for DVD until like 9-12 months later. But, if you don’t get this music channel and can’t wait that long you do have two other options…1) online, you can currently view a few full episodes for free on the VH1 official home web page for the series (and maybe elsewhere free if you search online) otherwise, you can pay a small fee to watch each episode one-by-one on Amazon.com video streaming or pay to download and own the episodes on Apple itunes. 2) if you know what BitTorrent is (file sharing) then that’s another option for you. Hope that helps.  m/

RockinRob119: I believe the “Heavy Metal Family Tree” is slightly different in the series? (If I remember correctly it includes doom as well) So perhaps slightly changed, although used in documentary Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey?

I guess it’s possible that Sam Dunn (the creator) may have updated/revised the ‘Heavy Metal Family Tree’ he originally created from his 2005 doc. movie for his new 2011/12 TV series. After all it’s been 6+ years since then and metal does evolve as is shown if you’ve been watching this awesome VH1 ‘Metal Evolution’ series. Sure hope VH1 Classic decides to pick it up for a second season next year. I really enjoyed the first season.

A second season would be excellent. There are still a lot of genres and subgenres to delve into. Personally I’d like to see an episode wholly dedicated to stoner/doom (although I’m actually more of a trash fan). A stoner/doom piece could trace origins back to psykedelia and garage of the 1960′s and 70′s, via Sabbath, and further back still to some blues influences. That’d be SO cool!

  • T_stemland

When will it be released on DVD?????

To Gus, I’ve tried to answer this question about DVD availability before to another poster. You must scroll down below to look for my other comments responding about this one. Click on ‘Load More Comments’ to open up more posts to this thread. You should be able to find my other comments. I will add though that availability will probably depend on whether you live in the U.S., Canada, or elsewhere in the world. I believe this VH1 TV Series was produced in Canada (Steve Dunn’s native country) so my guess is it will hit Canada first, then USA, before any other country when it is released on DVD & Blu-Ray.
