Metal Evolution Teaser – 50s (VH1)

Metal Evolution presents 11 episodes based on the ground-breaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree”. This 26 sub-genre genealogical chart reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the Chart as his road map, host/producer and metalhead turned anthropologist Sam Dunn, crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. From bars and back alleys to the biggest open air festivals, Sam will visit the pioneers of British and American hard rock who laid metal’s sonic foundation, as well as the current leaders of contemporary metal. Whether you love metal, documentaries or just great stories, Metal Evolution is the ultimate examination into the history of Heavy Metal music.

Drawing on the expertise of a whole team of musicians, journalists, academics, and producers, Sam will explore the questions heavy metal fans have always wanted to ask. A highlight of the series will be Sam’s in-depth discussions with many of heavy metal’s most important and influential personalities. From Alice Cooper to Slash, Lemmy to Rob Zombie and members of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slayer, Van Halen, Def Leppard, The Stooges, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, Poison, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Korn, and many more, Sam will investigate the history, myths and intricacies of Metal.

this series has been awesome … i think this is a well done documentary that basically touches on a lot of my music collection … also touches on a lot of the reasons i am devoted to metal … !,,!

I’m not even a fan specifically of heavy metal, and I find this a fascinating, well-written, provocative documentary of musical history.  It really expands the way you think about musical influence on and diversity of rock as a cultural force.  I just wish it were possible to see the whole “family tree” of hard rock and heavy metal online, because it is difficult to study it while watching and pausing the viewing only lets you see a portion of it at a time.  It would be a wonderful bonus to put on the website.

Loving the work to date.  It’s been really well done.  I agree with “Iyokokijo ” below, we need a poster of the metal genre tree.  Also, I don’t see TOOL anywhere listed in the new tree but I was sure they were listed in the tree during the Headbangers Journey movie.

    NEED this on Blu-ray/DVD.

Wondering if in the season finale (prog), just before the section on TOOL was filmed at Lollapalooza at UBC Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver BC…

It was good but he forgot about death and black metal. Also grunge has no place in heavy metal.

A bit disappointed about you guys leaving glam punk legends Hanoi Rocks outside the glam metal episode. They inspired so many of the bands that followed, Guns N Roses among others. Many think they are responsible for the whole thing. Some even accuse bands like Mötley Crüe and Poison of ripping them right off

This series completely sucked. You did prog metal last nite and didn’t even talk about OPETH! Of course now I look at your little chart and see u put Opeth in Goth metal!? WTF. Opeth is prog metal…Lacuna Coil is goth metal.  Of course the Canadian spends 30 mins talking about freaking Rush. And for a show about prog metal, I heard Metallica mentioned 5 times! Katatonia is prog metal too. Hell…you don’t even cover folk/pagan or Viking metal! No Amon Amarth or Eluveitie! And Children of Bodom under thrash!? and then you call hair metal, pop metal. I considere everything here illegitimate. Sam Dunns and Eddie Trunks who think they know metal really don’t.

    • Wonder who sucks really

Yeah, everything must “suck” for you, right? If it’s not to your liking, it sucks… Such an adolescent comment…
